This scholarship is donated in memory of Aguedo Avaricio Retodo M.D.
Aguedo “Adjie” Avaricio Retodo Jr. M.D. was born March 22, 1938 in Dayhagan, Philippines. Inspired by his older sister, Asuncion, who was an RN, he aspired early to become a physician and graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in Medicine. Quickly marrying his partner in life Amelia P. Abaya, he immigrated to the United States and completed a pyramidal general surgery program in Akron, Ohio followed by rigorous training programs in cardiothoracic and trauma surgery. Once honored to be President Bill Clinton’s personal on call trauma surgeon when he visited the San Francisco Bay Area, he practiced with passion at Eden Hospital of Castro Valley and St Rose Hospital of Hayward. With a passion for carpentry and gardening, he would be found always wearing his surgical scrubs while weeding his garden in the Hayward Hills or pounding nails into his redwood deck. He was always ready to take call in the hospital at a moment’s notice. A natural athlete, he quickly became versed in golf, hunting, tennis, volleyball, bowling, ice skating, and swimming. If there was any activity to engaged in, he was never afraid to give it a try and he usually excelled in the effort.
His proudest creation is a family of 5 boys and his wife all with names that begin with the Letter “A”. All avid Oakland A’s fans because he would say that we were the “A’s” too. He is survived by his wife Amelia, sons Anthony, Allen, Albert, Andrew, and Alex. Grandchildren Alexandra, Ashton, Angelina, Alaina, Avery, Audrey and Albert Jr. All of us miss his creativity and drive but remain inspired to spread more “A’s” throughout the world.
