Barbara Davis-Lyman is currently the Vice President of the Renaissance Society at Sacramento State University. Following is a quote from her -

“My adult life has been spent helping others to “level the playing field” for children and families: As a founding member of WEAVE; teaching the first HeadStart class in California; working as a consultant in the migrant camps. I taught at Sacramento City College for 40 years where I had the privilege to serve as President of the Academic Senate, President of the Los Rios Academic Senate as well as on the California Academic Senate Board, ending my career with an appointment from the Governor to the Community College Board of Governors as well as California Postsecondary Education Commission."

Impact

The SCC Diane Woodruff Scholarship scholarship supports students at Sacramento City College who are transferring to UC Berkeley in fall.

The CRC Jim Streng A.S. in Construction Scholarship supports students in the CRC Construction Program who have financial need.

The CRC Dr. Tammy Montgomery Scholarship supports first-generation college students.

Dr. Tammy Montgomery began her educational journey at Cosumnes River College thirty-five years ago and has advocated for community college students ever since. A first-generation reentry student with two small children and limited career options, she found a home at Cosumnes River College where she flourished in the embrace of counselors, professors, staff members, and administrators who cared about her success and her family’s future. She graduated with an AA degree from CRC and transferred to CSUS as a junior where she completed her BA and MA degrees in English. From there, she became a community college professor and taught English and Humanities at American River, Cosumnes River, and Folsom Lake Colleges. After completing a PhD in Philosophy and Religion, she became Dean of English and then Associate Vice President of Instruction at American River College. Recently, she retired from her position as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Instruction for the Los Rios Community College District. She credits the CRC community with ushering her through those early days as a community college student who was juggling work and family while attending college fulltime. She is both humbled and grateful for those who supported her and is pleased to pay it forward. This scholarship has been established in her name to support other first-generation students in their efforts to improve their lives and the lives of their loved ones through education.
