SCC Kevin Anthony Chapman Memorial Scholarship
Kevin Anthony Chapman’s life was full of involvement and the love of his family and many friends. Kevin was born on December 28, 1965 in Washington, D.C. at the famous Howard University Freedman’s Hospital. He was bright, a natural leader, and served as an inspiration to others. Like many young men his age, Kevin was modest about his academic accomplishments and his participation in the “Gifted Program” throughout most of his early school years in Richmond and Oakland, California.
Kevin’s long term goal was to become a lawyer. He completed requirements for a bachelors degree in Political Science from Louisiana State University in Shreveport, Louisiana. in December, 1988. He never actually saw the degree because of his untimely death six weeks after completing graduation requirements. Perhaps the experience that Kevin was most proud of was to have served as an intern in the office of Congressman Ronald Dellums in Washington, D.C. the last summer of his young life. He spoke in awe about meeting famous legislatures and having an opportunity to see government in action. He was especially impressed with meeting and talking on several occasions with African American leaders, including Jessie Jackson.
The Kevin Anthony Chapman Memorial Scholarship was started fourteen years ago to assist students, who like Kevin, have educational goals to make life better for themselves and their communities. Over twenty-five students have received these awards since the scholarship’s inception. It is the family’s hope that the scholarship will especially assist young African American students to believe in their potential and to seek higher levels of education.
