Marcia Bonawitz
Marcia Bonawitz is the donor to the John A. Bonawitz Memorial Scholarship. She wrote the following:
In early 1970 my late husband, for whom the John A. Bonawitz Memorial Scholarship is named, started taking business classes at Sacramento City College. He fell in love with this beautiful campus, and often mentioned the ivy league grounds and buildings. Unfortunately, he was unable to graduate because of family financial hardships during our early years of marriage, and had to drop out of classes. Over the years he often mentioned how he enjoyed Sac City and regretted not being able to continue and complete his educational goal.
In the late 1990’s, two years after his passing, I was fortunate to be hired as an adjunct professor and shortly after a full-time professor at Sacramento City College. I too fell in love with this campus. Walking the halls and grounds over the years, seeing what John saw, has helped me heal from his loss.
John loved people and helping others. I decided by starting a memorial scholarship in his name, I could give back and this is something John would have loved. Knowing that his scholarship is helping disadvantaged students is a great comfort to our family. I feel that the John A. Bonawitz Memorial Scholarship could be the first step in helping someone achieve their educational dream. Hopefully, it gives a student the chance to move towards their educational goal, a chance that John never received all those years ago.
Impact
The John A. Bonawitz Memorial Scholarship supports students in the Cosmetology program or Nail Technology program with a B average or better. If funding is still available after all qualified applicants have received scholarships, the scholarships are awarded to SCC students with financial need.
