River Valley Garden Club

he River Valley Garden Club has been in existence for over 20 years. It was established to both provide social experiences for residents of Rancho Murieta (a small unincorporated community located east of Sacramento off Hwy 16) and to assist homeowners dwelling there to deal with the soil they live on. This area had long been chewed up by hydraulic mining and dredging for gold in the mid-1800s. The soil is abysmal, lacks nutrients, benefits greatly from amendments, and also from thoughtful native landscape design in our increasingly drought prone climate.

The RVGC has offered a scholarship program from the beginning because the membership knows how important having knowledgeable support from trained landscaping experts can be. Several of our recipients have gone on to achieve successful careers as landscape designers. Several of them have designed dozens of gardens right in the Rancho Murieta community. Others have branched out into the environments sciences or other horticulture-adjacent fields, fulfilling their dreams.

Our desire is to provide the means for students to achieve their goals with these scholarships. This money can be used for anything that will help them do this — whether it’s to buy a computer, pay the rent, put gas in their car, feed their families, pay for childcare, or buy their college supplies.

We garden club members thank you for the opportunity to pay it forward.
