FLC George and Margaret Dervishian Scholarship
Margaret Vahanian Dervishian and George Dervishian were orphaned at very young ages as a result of the Armenian Genocide. Margaret was taken into Birds Nest and was raised by Danish missionary Maria “Mama” Jacobsen.
George’s and Margaret’s lives exemplify courage, hard work and a strong moral compass that led them to success in America. It is that success that makes this scholarship possible.
Maria Jacobsen is an example of courage, compassion and dedication in caring for the homeless and helpless victims of the tragedy of war. Students must write an essay of no more than 750 words on Maria Jacobsen, a Danish missionary, who established the Birds Nest Orphanage in Beirut, Lebanon.
